Stars Without Light

Reading Time: 2 minutes

This poem was inspired by the word prompt “stargazing,” where I took the concept and flipped it on its head, focusing on the experience of longing and isolation, rather than the typical visual interpretation of the stars.

The prompt led me to explore the idea of someone who, though they can’t see the stars, still feels connected to their presence in the night sky. Through sensory details — touch, sound, and emotion — the poem attempts to capture what it might feel like to stargaze without sight, to long for something greater without the expectation of ever being seen or heard.

The poem weaves a journey of isolation and yearning, not for visual beauty, but for connection — and the quiet, unspoken bond that can exist between someone and the vastness of the universe, even when they are unseen.

I stand beneath the sky,
feeling the cold air against my skin,
the night wrapping around me like a blanket.
The ground beneath my feet is soft,
cool to the touch,
as if the earth is breathing.

The wind speaks in whispers,
a song I can’t quite catch,
but it stirs something inside me,
a yearning,
like a memory I can’t reach.

I stretch my hands upward,
not to see,
but to touch the world I know is there —
the stars,
each one a pulse I can feel
in the tips of my fingers,
the way the air shifts
when they burn too brightly,
the way the silence deepens
as if the world holds its breath.

I listen to the hum of the night,
the hum of something far away,
far from me.
But it’s close enough to touch,
close enough to hope
that I might, just once,
feel it answer.

I reach,
not for light,
but for connection,
for the warmth that never comes,
for a sky that never whispers back.

And still, I stand.
Not to see,
but to feel the vastness
of a universe that will never know
I’m here,
waiting to be heard.
