What happens when we give too much, too freely?
This poem is inspired by the word prompt “lavish”, it explores the emotional weight of giving too much—when love overflows without being asked for.
The challenge of this prompt was to find beauty in the act of over-giving.
I loved like summer—
loud,
and without asking.
Gave what I had
before it was wanted:
hands,
time,
the hush between songs.
Poured sweetness
into every cup,
even the ones
you left turned over.
I was rainfall
in a droughtless spring,
filling what did not thirst,
drowning what did.
It was lavish—
the way I gave,
not with gold,
but with the quiet currency
of presence.
Spoke your name
like a melody no one finished,
left lights on
you never came home to.
You touched my devotion
with fingers that forgot,
and still—
I left the door open
for your shadow.
But even rain must rest.
Even light learns
to draw its curtains.
