Today I wrote three different poetic styles for the word prompt of “butterscotch”
Ode
An ode is a type of lyric poem that praises or celebrates a person, place, thing, or idea. It is usually formal and ceremonious in tone and style.
Ode to Samuel Parkinson
Oh Samuel Parkinson, how sweet you were
To give the world a taste of butterscotch
A candy made of butter, sugar, treacle
That melts upon the tongue with such delight
You started in your shop on High Street
In Doncaster, a town in Yorkshire land
You boiled and stirred and poured your golden mixture
And cut it into pieces for your fans
You gained the royal seal of approval
When Queen Victoria opened up the race
You gave her some of your delicious candy
And made her smile with joy upon her face
You spread your fame across the seas and borders
Your butterscotch became a global treat
You inspired many cooks and confectioners
To use your flavor in their cakes and sweets
Oh Samuel Parkinson, we thank you kindly
For your invention of this splendid treat
We honor you with every bite we savor
Of your amazing butterscotch so sweet
Diamante
Butterscotch
Sweet, sticky
Melting, dripping, coating
Candy, caramel, cream, sugar
Whipping, stirring, baking
Rich, smooth
Pudding
Villanelle
A villanelle is a 19-line poem with five tercets and one quatrain. It has two refrains and two rhymes that repeat throughout the poem. The first and third lines of the first tercet are the refrains, and they alternate as the last lines of each stanza.
I love the taste of butterscotch
It melts upon my tongue so sweet
It makes me happy, that’s no botch
I like to mix it with some scotch
And sip it slowly as a treat
I love the taste of butterscotch
I sometimes bake it in a quiche
Or spread it on a slice of wheat
It makes me happy, that’s no botch
I don’t care if it makes me rich
Or if it adds some extra heat
I love the taste of butterscotch
I never tire of its rich flavor
It always feels like such a feat
It makes me happy, that’s no botch
So let me have my butterscotch
And don’t you dare to call it cheat
I love the taste of butterscotch
It makes me happy, that’s no botch
