Today I wrote four different poetry styles.
Petrarchan Sonnet
A Petrarchan sonnet is a 14-line poem that has two parts: an octave (the first eight lines) and a sestet (the last six lines). The octave has a rhyme scheme of ABBAABBA and usually presents a problem or a question. The sestet has a rhyme scheme of CDECDE or CDCDCD and usually offers a solution or an answer.
How can I make the most of the present?
When the past haunts me with its memories.
And the future fills me with its worries.
How can I find peace and be content?
How can I enjoy the gift of the present?
When the world is full of troubles and woes.
And the clock is ticking as it goes.
How can I be happy and resilient?
The answer lies within my mind.
I can choose to focus on the good.
And let go of what I can’t control.
The present is a treasure I can find.
If I practice gratitude and love.
And listen to my heart and soul.
Haiku
A gift or a time
Both are precious and fleeting
Enjoy the present
Clerihew
A clerihew comprises four lines (or several four-line stanzas) with the rhyme scheme AABB, and the first line of the stanza must be a person’s name.
George was a curious monkey
Who liked to unwrap every present
He tore off the ribbons and paper
And found a banana that was pleasant
Triolet
A triolet is a eight-line poem that has a rhyme scheme of ABaAabAB and repeats the first line as the fourth and seventh lines, and the second line as the eighth line.
The present is a gift to cherish
Don’t let it slip away in haste
Enjoy each moment as you wish
The present is a gift to cherish
Don’t worry about the future or the past
Just live in the now and embrace
The present is a gift to cherish
Don’t let it slip away in haste
